In Memoriam H.K. is dedicated to the memory of Hans Keller, the internationally renowned musician, writer, broadcaster and teacher, who died on 6th November, 1985.
The piece consists of a series of alternating cortèges and incantatory dirges. The former start as if from a great distance while the latter always remain to the fore. As the work progresses the cortèges become louder, the dirges more impassioned and the clear demarcation of the two blurred, until a thematic climax is reached. The last section is an epitaph in which the work's main material is played in its simplest, starkest form.
In Memoriam H.K. was first performed by Barrie Webb on 25th May, 1988 at the Bluecoat Arts Centre, Liverpool as part of the 'Up Beat to the Tate' Festival. It has been recorded by him on compact disc for Musica Nova (CD Nova 16)
